Sun Trip Tour 2017 challenges

The first informations about the 4 challenges that can be taken by the Sun Trip Tour 2017 participants.

Energy efficiency, performance, communication and state of mind, all the aspects of the Sun Trip will be represented.

The complete challenge rules will be communicated before departure.

Eco Drive Challenge

The Eco Drive Challenge will reward energy efficiency and participant steadiness. Steadiness means arriving at the waypoints before a cut-off time determined by the organizer (more informations later).

Energy efficiency is to use only solar energy with a limited means of production (economic efficiency and the grey energy (embodied energy) required to build the solar array.

Participants in this challenge are allowed to carry a charger which will be sealed. They will be able to access it in case of an emergency or technical incident, but a tampered seal will result in disqualification from the challenge.

Energy efficiency will be determined by a weighted coefficient based on the amount of solar cells on the solar cycle:

– The solar cells count for each full cell – type C60, dimension 125*125 mm;

– Solar cells only exposed when the cycle is not moving are weighted with a 0,5 coefficient to account for their weaker daily production;

– When the cycle is a tandem, the number of cells will be divided by the number of people on the cycle.

The winner will the cycle that will have respected the cut-off time for all journey legs without tampering with their charger’s seal and that holds the smallest weighted number of cells.

The winner (or the winners) will be designated at the arrival of the Sun Trip Tour in Lyon after taking in consideration the performance of eligible participants on all the legs with the exception of the final one between Trévoux and Lyon.

The Super SunTripper Challenge

This challenge rewards participants that will maximize distances (and therefore elevation) on their itinerary for the Sun Trip Tour 2017.

Participants competing in this challenge may imagine as many detours as they want as long as they meet these criteria:

  • Do not make a loop or backtrack;
  • Recharge using only 100% solar energy;
  • Respect the cut-off time for all the journey legs. The cut-off schedule will be announced later and each minute over the cut-off time will mean 1 km subtracted from the adventurer’s kilometre count;
  • Scrupulously respect the rule about not riding at night, as mentioned in the Adventure Regulation.

Participants in this challenge are allowed to carry a charger which will be sealed. They will be able to access it in case of an emergency or technical incident, but a tampered seal will result in disqualification from the challenge.

The official kilometre count will be made by analyzing the Capturs beacons.

And another monitoring system (personal GPS or Strava smartphone application) could be necessary for the participation in this challenge, in case of problem with Capturs beacons.

The challenge results will be calculated for each journey leg and the winner will be awarded a badge on the following day, during the collective departure events.

The final winner will be designated in Lyon after adding the kilometres ridden on each leg. The Trévoux-Lyon leg will not be taken into account in this challenge.

We’d like to remind participants that the night spent at the Italian refuge is facultative. It is therefore not mandatory to stop there as part of the Super SunTripper Challenge.

Best Photo Challenge

This challenge will reward the best photographer for each of journey leg.

At the end of each leg, participants may provide the organizers with a photo (whether it has already been published on social media or not). This photo will be published on Facebook by the organization, on a distinct contest album for each leg.

Participants will have until 7pm the day of each official stage in order to publish or provide their best photo to the organization. The Facebook followers of the Sun Trip will be able to vote all evening on the best photo.

The best photo will be the one counting the most Likes.

A badge will be given to the winner the following day, during the collective departure events.

The Trévoux-Lyon leg will not be accounted for in this challenge, but upon arrival, a special badge will be awarded to the participant that received the biggest number of Likes on all the photos submitted on the challenge. In the eyes of the public, they will be the Best Photographer of the Sun Trip Tour 2017.

The Super Combative

By way of a Jury’s Choice, this challenge will be left to the judgment of the organization members.

The Super Combative will not meet a defined criteria, but will reward the participant that will be perceived as being the most in phase with the Sun Trip spirit and that demonstrated best their polyvalence: technical mastery, original itinerary, communication skills, perseverance.

The Super Combative will be designated at the Arrival Ceremony in Lyon on July 21.
