The Sun Trip The Sun Trip

If you weren’t able to follow the first Sun Trip Morocco, held between May 22 and June 12, here’s a summary of the highlights of this adventure, which is due to be held every spring. It’s the story of a 2,000 km adventure, where spring sunshine promotes the idea of solar mobility. Many of our participants had never set foot in Morocco before, but thanks to the solar bike, in 13 stages they will have completed a North-South route worthy of the great adventures, discovering a multi-faceted and multi-colored country!

Acte 1 : le projet Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.

Sponsor of the Sun Trip since 2017, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region hosted the start of the prologue in Lyon, in the presence of Sophie Blachère, Regional Councillor, Simon Declerck, Head of Innovation at EDF’s regional delegation, Fatima Baroudi, Moroccan Consul General in Lyon, and Hongwei Zhang, Chinese Consul in Lyon, with whom we spoke about the Sun Trip’s plans for China in November. The prologue participants rode together from Lyon to Sète, before taking the ferry to Morocco.

Act 2: The official departure for Tangier

The very first Sun Trip departure from Africa took place on April 29 in Tangier, in the presence of local authorities and the French Consul General, since Sun Trip Morocco had received official support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Paris. The sun didn’t shine at the start, but participants soon found it again along the Atlantic coast, heading for Rabat.

Act 3: Green Morocco!

From Tangier to Khenifra, the Sun Trip Morocco route offered a gentle warm-up along the Atlantic coast, then inland. After a rainy spring, the landscapes were lush and green everywhere. Here are a few images from the first few days of adventure and encounters.

Act 4: Morocco’s mountains!

Between Khénifra, Boulmane Dadès and Ouarzazate, the group had to cross the Atlas Mountains. Dreamlike scenery, some peaking at over 2,900 meters, with the added bonus of crossing the Dades and Todra gorges by solar bike. The sun was out in force, although temperatures were cool at times.

After a week on the road, the participants gathered in Boulmane Dadès, a magnificent village in the heart of the mountains, for the only break of the adventure. Colors in every eye!

Act 5: Morocco’s deserts

On the way to Ouarzazate, the group begins to turn its back on the mountains, even if the altitudes remain high and a few climbs are still on the agenda. But for the last 1,000 kilometers, the adventure takes on a whole new dimension.

On the 9th day of adventure, the heat rises and the wind becomes an obstacle on the high plateaus. Perhaps the most difficult part of the project, with days of over 200km on the agenda and a headwind!

At the head of the pack, two-time Sun Trip winner Raf Van Hulle is already on the Atlantic coast. He’s riding 300 km a day without difficulty, and is waiting for the right day to attempt 500 km in a single day, which would be a record!

In the ambience of the great Moroccan Sahara, the group begins to see the end of the road, with a route along the ocean. Conditions won’t allow Raf Van Hulle to reach 500 km in a single day, but the performance is there, as the group completes 200 km stages, powered by solar energy.

On May 11, the day before the finish, a 190 km stage between the Atlantic Ocean and the desert, all with a good headwind. The magic of the Deep South!

Only 100 km to Laayoune!

Final act: arrival in Laâyoune!

On Monday May 12, day 14 of the adventure, 9 participants finally reached the finish line in Laâyoune, the main town in the Moroccan Sahara, after almost 2000 km from Tangier!

A welcoming ceremony was held at the end of the day, attended by Abdeslam Bekrate, Wali of the Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra region, and Hamdi Ould Errachid, President of the Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra Regional Council. A great honor to express the support of the Moroccan authorities for the southern provinces. On this occasion, the idea of a 2026 edition linking Laâyoune to Marrakech was raised! More information in the coming weeks and months.

Some TV reports made for the finish:
